Loch Lomond is the UK’s largest expanse of fresh water. It is just 14 miles from Glasgow and lies on the Highland Boundary Fault (the boundary between the western lowlands of Central Scotland & the Southern Highlands) and is overlooked by Ben Lomond towering 973m over Loch Lomond. Ben Lomond is the most southerly Munro (mountain over 3000ft/910 mts) in Scotland and is a very popular day walk for many visitors each year starting from Rowardennan.
Loch Lomond is one of the most visited Lochs and during the summer months activity on the water and around the Loch thrives with a hugh range of things to see and do both on the water and on land. To get a full list of all activities it is best to visit one of the Tourist Information Centres near Loch Lomond. In 1953 the Maid of the Loch was launched at Balloch and provided sailings up and down the Loch until 1981.The Maid is the last paddle steamer built in Britain and the last in a long line of paddle steamers on the loch, dating back to 1818. Nowadays, the Maid is berthed at Balloch pier and is open to visitors daily during the summer and has a cafe and bar on board. There is a plan to get the ship sailing again in 2013 when she will be 60 years old. A Waterbus Service operates on the Loch and calls at 12 destinations on both sides of the Loch. The service operates from April until October and is a great way to get around the Loch or just take a break from driving. Loch Lomond has the largest variety of fish in the National Park. The loch has also a very good reputation for coarse fishing. Loch Lomond has been rated as one of the hardest lochs for pike fishing. The variety of fish reaches from sea trout to chub. Loch Lomond is also home to a protected fish species: the powan (a white fish). If caught, the fish should be returned quickly to the water.
