The villages of Ardlui can be found on the northern shores of Loch Lomond.
Ardlui (Gaelic: Aird laoigh)
The village of Ardlui lies at the most northern point of Loch Lomond. Ardlui is famed for its superb walking routes around the loch, which attracts many visitors to the area. A ferry route is also operational to take travellers across the Loch to join up with the West Highland Way. For serious walkers, Ardlui has a route to the top of Ben Vorlich, found by the railway station (which is part of the west highland line). A gentler route can be found by Loch Sloy Power Station a few miles south for less experienced walkers.
The popularity of the village grew from its location as a connecting point between steamers from Inversnaid and road transport further north during Victorian times. In summer the Ardlui hotel also runs a ferry to Ardleish which is regularly used by West Highland Way walkers.
The village also has its very own marina offering various facilities for boaters, including berthing facilities, a slipway and boat sales. For fishing, permits can be provided by the shop located at the Ardlui Caravan Park. Pike fishing is particularly popular and a local ferry can take fishers to some of the best pike fishing spots at your request. Ardlui has a railway station on the West Highland line. It is sheltered by the mountains and north of Loch Lomond.
Ardlui is worth the visit purely to see the villages rare wildlife, red deer hinds are often seen in the month of May and a bird centre is also located at the north end of the station.
The Ardlui Hotel’s own ferry is called the ‘Coral Anne’ which provides a short crossing over Loch Lomond linking the hotel, holiday park and campsite with the West Highland Way at Ardleish Jetty It carrys a maximum of 11 passengers; the ferry service operates from 9am until 7pm every day until the end of October. Simply raise the ball if you require the ferry at Ardleish and the boat will head over and collect you. £4.00 per person each way £6.00 for solo passengers.
