Callander is a colourful, bustling holiday town set dramatically beneath high, wooded crags and close to the Pass of Leny.
Sitting at the northern gateway to the Trossachs and the foot of the Highlands it gained fame as the location for the original ‘Doctor Findlay’s Casebook’, a popular TV series that ran from 1962 until 1971 and used Arden House in Callander as the setting which can still be seen today. The Town now forms one of the Gateways to The Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park.
There is a bustling Main Street with a range of traditional and modern shops including the Rob Roy and the Trossachs Visitor Centre which is also the location of The Tourist Information Centre in Ancaster Square. Callander is a wonderful base to tour the Trossachs or as a stopping point whilst touring Scotland.
There are many bed and breakfast and holiday cottages available in Callander and also the 4 star Roman Camp Hotel which is a perfect wedding venue. Visitors will also find many quality places to eat and lots of shops within the town itself and within a short drive of Callander.
The Town also has the McLaren Leisure Centre and 20m swimming pool with an indoor bowling club, spa bath, steam room, solarium, climbing wall & multi-use dry sports club.
Every year in the Autumn around October, Callander is the venue for The Callander Jazz and Blues Festival which brings many bands and performers to the town and surrounding villages for a 3 day extravaganza of Blues and Jazz with a Jazz Cruise on Loch Katrine. This is a great event and attracts hundreds of visitors to the town for the festival so accommodation can sometimes be hard to find at this time of year.
Callander has a full range or services including banks, petrol station, supermarkets and a laundrette and is well service by public transport from Stirling. There is no train station in Callander any longer as the old railway line is now a cycle track forming part of the National Cycle Route 7.
There are some good walking routes around Callander and one of the most popular is the walk up to the Bracklin Falls and its impressive bridge over the falls. A good leaflet produced by the National Park and the local community on the walks around Callander can be viewed and downloaded here and the second part from here.
