Inchmurrin is Loch Lomond‘s largest island and is situated in the south of the loch. The island was formed along the Highland Boundary Fault line and is of special scientific interest. Altogether there are nine archeological sites. The island has mature alder and holly woodland and a hill with stunning views. Inchmurrin is 1.5 miles long and the highest point 300 ft wide.
Once a shooting estate used by the Duke of Montrose, Inchmurrin is now owned by the Scott Family. The family manages the island and has a herd of beef cattle, sheep as well as a bar and restaurant. Both, bar and restaurant, are open from March till October. The Scott family has lived on the island for about seventy year. Inchmurrin has only about 10 inhabitants and there are 15 houses on the whole island.
The island offers a range of self-catering accommodation including one hotel with bar and restaurant. Because of the beauty the island has it is also a popular place for weddings. A ferry service to the island is available but it is also possible to reach Inchmurrin by using your own boat as the hotel on the island has several piers. Everyone who enjoys natural beauty and quiet walks will enjoy Inchmurrin. The island is also an ideal location for water sports such as angling and boating.
Besides its beautiful scenery the island is also worth a visit for its historical heritage such as the Lennox Castle from the 14th century. The island has been visited by many famous figures including Mary Queen of Scots and Robert the Bruce. Inchmurrin Castle was an exile for Isabella, the daughter of 8th Earl of Lennox. Her husband, father and two sons were executed by Stirling in 1425.
Inchmurrin offers spectacular views and is a tranquil place perfect to get away from the hustle and bustle of our lives. By ferry, it takes only 15 minutes to reach the island from the car park on the mainland at Arden.
